Pre-Shrunk 2012 Favourites
Tonight is the opening of the Pre-Shrunk show at Argyle Fine Art (1559 Barrington St., 7pm). The premise is pretty cool:
…200 works to choose from by a large selection of artists working in a variety of mediums. All of the works measure 4”x5” and sell for $175.
Argyle Fine Art has released the entire collection online so that patrons can view early and scout out the pieces...

Huurd is coming soon!
I’ve teamed up with my friends Matt and Josh to build Huurd. Right now it’s still in the planning/designing/building stage, so all I can tell you is that when it’s launched, it’ll help the creative minds of Halifax (and perhaps beyond) come together. If you want to know more than that you’ll have to wait, but you can sign up for updates and we’ll keep you in...

This week was a big week for me. I’m making a change career-wise; switching jobs just before the Christmas holiday. I’ll be taking on a new opportunity that’s quite nerve-wracking, but I have a good feeling about it. Nothing like a challenge to start the new year off right.
I don’t want to get ahead of myself, though. There’s still a bit of time until the end of the...

Fall Film
Some photos I took this fall using Ilford film. I’d it’s my favorite for b&w.
I photographed Anne for her blog a while back. She’s shuch a lovely lady and her cooking is amazing. I sampled a gingerbread cake and a delicious quinoa and beet salad on the day I took these photos. On top of that, as I was about to finish up, she decided to make some homemade granola!...

Well hello! So perhaps it has been a while since I’ve done a weekly roundup, but I choose not to dwell on that. Let’s focus on the fact that it’s Friday and the freedom of Saturday and Sunday are a mere few hours away. I hope that you all have a lovely weekend. On to the goodies!

On Birthdays and DIY'ing
Inspired by the work of Confetti System and Geronimo Balloons, I decided to make a photo booth backdrop and some other crafty goodies for my recent 25th birthday celebration. I failed at documenting most of it, but here’s a glimpse of the photo booth and the garland:
As far as DIY’ing goes: I’m into it. Lots more of that to come from me!

My design/letterpress work was featured in the latest Wedding Guide published by The Coast and Duly Noted!
If you or anyone you know is getting married, having a party, would like birth announcements, or could use some personal stationery, please let me know! I’m happy to take on custom work! [Photo taken by my awesome friend Matt Morgan]

I know I’ve said this before, but I really do have a lot of talented friends who continually inspire me to keep striving for whatever flavour-of-the-month dreams and ambitions I have at any given time. Regardless of the physical distance between us, news of their work and efforts reach me, usually by the power of the interwebs and I am - once again - blown away and simultaneously kicked in...

Inkwell Modern Handmade
Last Thursday I took some time to stop into the newest shop in town, Inkwell Modern Handmade Boutique & Letterpress Studio. The proprietor Andrea and I were first acquainted through the Letterpress Gang and I’ve had the opportunity to watch from afar as she built this business and shop from the ground up.
Inkwell sells all kinds of wonderful handmade cards, prints, textiles and other...

This week has been pretty interesting to say the least. I had a bit of a twitter discussion with Canadian comedian Gerry Dee about a design contest (read: crowd-sourcing/spec) he was trying to start over twitter. It has since been called off. I also attended an open house for a new local shop owned by a fellow letterpress lover (a full post on that to come!) and on Sunday I’ll be heading to...

Black and White and Summer all over.
As mentioned, I had a roll of black and white film being processed. I definitely have a big soft spot for black and white photography & I’m pretty happy with how this roll turned out (even with the light leak issue).

Curtis Rothney
Maybe it’s being a transplant from Winnipeg that gives Curtis Rothney a completely fresh photographic take on Halifax. Or maybe it’s because he’s not setting out to make photos of Halifax, but of skateboarding and skate culture. Either way, this 18 year-old (yep, I know) has a sick aesthetic and really knows his stuff when it comes to lighting - both natural and artificial. Below...

Light Leaks In
I’ve been shooting 35mm film with my Minolta x-700 for a year or so now and I’ve always been pretty happy with the results. This roll I was a little sad to see some pretty intense light leaks happening, so I’ll have to look into fixing it once the roll that’s currently in there is finished up.
I still have a b&w roll that I’m waiting on and I’m hoping that...

I decided to try a little something different for this week’s main image. I got doodling and this came out, so I brought it into Computerland and added a pretty background colour! Aside from that, it’s business as usual this week! I’m headed to a wedding on Cape Breton Island and I feel inspired to take lots of photos and appreciate the beauty in everything around me. Hope the...

OCAD’s new identity by Bruce Mau Design.
After over a year of focus groups and testing, the Canadian univeristy finally settled on a dynamic system that allows students (and others) to interact with the icon.
Ever since AOL introduced their ever-changing logo, this approach to identity design has been reluctantly scooped up by a lot of designers and applied in a multitude of ways....

The World's Largest Water Fight
Hi from Thailand!
Luckily, my time here coincides with a national holiday; basically the Thai New Year. Today is somewhat equivalent to New Year’s Eve, a festival called Songkran. People take to the streets armed with buckets or super soakers and over the next couple of days, play a part in the World’s Largest Water Fight. Everyone is fair game, which seems not to bother any of the...

Camera Query
There are only a few days before I head to Thailand (eek!) and I’m having a pretty intense internal debate on how many/which camera(s) to bring along in order to capture my adventures. I’m only there for a week, but we’re doing some traveling around, the usual sightseeing, and lots of beach time.

Friday has sort of become a “thing” in the last week or so thanks to Rebecca Black. Personally, I think it’s about time that Friday gets the recognition it deserves for being such an awesome day! Matt and JJ's nicknacks
Something I’ve noticed among friends who rent apartments or flats is that, generally, most twenty-somethings neglect putting any “final touches” on their spaces. I can understand why: small (or no budget) for nice things or collectables and the transient mentality that comes with being a renter.
When I visited Matt and JJ’s new flat a couple of Saturdays ago for a clothing...

Weighing The Evidence of Exercise →
I’ve been working out for about six weeks now. Five days a week I’m at the gym for about an hour. 30 minutes of cardio and 15 or 20 minutes spent on weights training. One day I’ll work my arms, the next legs or core, etc.
I’ve lost two pounds. Two. Not exactly the result I was hoping for.

Made In Canada: Gallant & Jones
I’ve pretty much had it up to *here* with winter and it’s skin-drying properties. The snow can be pretty to look at, but the frigid temperatures, difficult driving conditions, and near-constant grey skies aren’t. Basically: I’m ready for the summer and everything it has to offer. Namely, sitting on a patio, deck, or patch of sand with a cold beverage in hand.
If I could...

Understanding Your Medium →
Many agencies and designers don’t see the benefit of learning how to code – if the code couldn’t be used in production. It might seem to be wasted money if you send a designer on a CSS course yet he takes 5 times as long to do something as the outsourced team you normally use. However, even a basic knowledge of CSS will mean that designer can start to think about the capabilities of CSS while...
