1. June 26th

Tonight is my brother’s High School Graduation. Some family are visiting and I will hopefuly take the day off from work tomorrow, so I’m feeling pretty excited given this week has been painfully boring at work.

For instnance: just now I was looking at rent prices in New York. I was thinking about applying for an Art Assistant job at Conde Nast (although I am fully aware that I have no connections there or an “in” of any kind). Even though it’s unlikely this would happen in the very near future, I was just curious to see how much an apartment in NY would run me. I think with some hunting and comprimising on the big fat suburban lifestlye I’m used to (and maybe a 15 minute ride on the subway) I could make it work.

There is something about being in the city that can instantly make me happy. Halifax isn’t a very big city, but on a summer night it can feel like you’re in a less busy area of a big city. I love walking down the street and seeing people doing their own thing. Also, when I’m in the city I feel purposeful. Instead of just living, I’m exploring or meeting, or doing or seeing. It’s just more interesting.

That brings me to something I thought of while I was alone in my car on the way home from the City last night.

I spend a lot of time on the internet. More so now that my job has zero responsibility or creative demands. I need to be learning all the time, seeing things or trying to solve a problem to be happy at a job. The great thing about the internet is that you can do that WHILE being a lazy bum. The internet is my Suburban City.

This is also the worst part of the internet. If you don’t know where to look or don’t take the time to find somethign enlightening, the internet can be confusing and useless (beyond research & networking).

For example, my mom has a hard time with google. If you can’t master the google, log off.

    That is all.
