1. Camera Query

There are only a few days before I head to Thailand (eek!) and I’m having a pretty intense internal debate on how many/which camera(s) to bring along in order to capture my adventures. I’m only there for a week, but we’re doing some traveling around, the usual sightseeing, and lots of beach time.

On Sunday I went to Best Buy and impulse-bought a Bloggie because my DSLR doesn’t have video capabilities and, along with taking photos, I’d love to be able to take some video. Here’s the thing: the Bloggie kind of sucks. I have no real facts with which to back this judgement up, I’ll just say I didn’t like its interface and I found when I replayed the video it was kind of choppy. While I was at the store, I seriously considered getting two other rigs:

    1. A Flip Ultra HD (same price as the Bloggie @ $199)
    2. This crazy mofo that costs almost four bills (aka The Lumix TS3 @ $379ish)

So, here is the big question:

What do I do? I’m definitely returning the Bloggie, but should I get the Flip Ultra? Does anyone out there know if the Lumix is worth the money? I also want to take one or both of my still cameras. I have a Canon Rebel XT with two lenses that’s very reliable and a 35mm Minolta that takes great photos, but it’s a tad heavy and I’d have to have lots of film on hand.

Do I take both cameras? Just the digital? I don’t want to risk not getting good photos, but I also want to challenge myself a little to make some images that are actually interesting and not the typical travel photos. In terms of video, In the end I’d be looking to make something like this. Would anyone out there consider just getting the Lumix, taking it, and leaving the other two SLRs behind?

    Update:

Thanks for sending feedback my way! Somehow the people who manage Flip’s twitter page found my query and gave their (slightly bias) two cents:

I was sort of leaning toward getting the Flip anyhow, so I went and did that yesterday. I also took Jacob’s recommendation and got a GorillaPod - one that will hold both the flip and my DSLR, as I have decided to leave my precious Minolta at home.

    Camera Query: Solved!

    2. ephemeralness answered: Even a low level Cannon ($150ish?) will give you good video for what you want. Get a big memory card. Leave the film at home.
    3. jacob answered: Not familiar with the Lumix, but my girlfriend uses a flip hd for everything and the quality seems great. Maybe a Gorillapod too?
