1. Design is not just something you do on a piece of paper. Design is how you think, how you see, how you act, what you buy, what you own, what you surround yourself with; what you listen to what you don’t listen to, what you watch, what you don’t watch. So design, for me, is a kind of way of life and perhaps a substitute for any other kind of religion.

  2. In Print

My design/letterpress work was featured in the latest Wedding Guide published by The Coast and Duly Noted!

If you or anyone you know is getting married, having a party, would like birth announcements, or could use some personal stationery, please let me know! I’m happy to take on custom work!

  4. OCAD’s new identity by Bruce Mau Design.

After over a year of focus groups and testing, the Canadian univeristy finally settled on a dynamic system that allows students (and others) to interact with the icon.

Ever since AOL introduced their ever-changing logo, this approach to identity design has been reluctantly scooped up by a lot of designers and applied in a multitude of ways. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Personally, I think that within the context of an art and design university it makes complete sense. There’s also something about the way they handled the type and the line weight of the boxes that I love.

Although I think a year of process and research sounds a bit like overkill, I can appreciate a brand that is more than the icon alone. Imagine: a year to work on a brand mark!

“There’s never been a shortage of ideas here.”

  5. Look at this gorgeous specimen! And FORTY-EIGHT DOLLARS, you guys! For EIGHT weights and styles. That works out to $6 per font. Ridiculous. This isn’t just a pretty face, though (teehee). As Megan said, the proceeds go toward design education in Canada via the GDC. Go! Purchase! Make beautiful things!

Frank Chimero, a good friend and a badass designer, is writing a book called The Shape of Design. He is funding it via Kickstarter and you’d be crazy not to back the project.
Knowing Frank, I am 100% certain that this will be a book of zero kvetching, type pedantry, or how-to cornmeal. Expect inspiration, insight, and wonder.

I put my money where my mouth is and just backed this project. I, too expect inspiration, insight, and wonder. Go! Help Frank make this happen!

  8. Many agencies and designers don’t see the benefit of learning how to code – if the code couldn’t be used in production. It might seem to be wasted money if you send a designer on a CSS course yet he takes 5 times as long to do something as the outsourced team you normally use. However, even a basic knowledge of CSS will mean that designer can start to think about the capabilities of CSS while designing, be able to design for a medium he understands. He’ll be able to talk to the developers in an informed way about the effect he wants to achieve and be able to understand better the constraints of browser technology.

This article is 100% on point. Part of my job is staying educated and knowing as much as possible about the media that I need or want to use as a designer. A big thing on my mind right now is where/how can I get these skills. Do I have to go back to school, are there ways for me to teach myself, or should my employer provide (or even partially subsidize) further training? I’d love to hear other’s thoughts on this.

  9. Print Craft by Visual Inclination

This is (for a lack of a better term) design porn. More often than not, I’m more interested in seeing how something came together than I am in seeing the final product.

Thanks again to Sam for the tip!
